WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER JOINING THE CHOIR?
Catholics all over the world reach the culmination of all celebrations each year as they commemorate Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
All too often, we look to Easter as a cause of celebration and rejoicing, but forget that it is also an important call to action.
In order to live our lives fully in the resurrected Christ, we have to involve ourselves in the work of the Church.
The apostles discovered that truth on the day of Pentecost. Experiencing the death and resurrection of Jesus would not allow them to return to their former lives. They were now called to ministry.
That call still comes to each and every one of the baptized members of the Church.
We can fulfill the calling in a wide multitude of ways.
Participating in the music ministry and choir is just one of them.
But for many sitting in the pews, it is perhaps what they would like to do. (Even if they remain secret about the desire.)
People talk themselves out of participating in the choir for numerous excuses such as: I don’t think my voice is good enough, or I can’t commit to every rehearsal or Sunday, or even the occasional: My singing or instrumental abilities are a little too good to be used in an amateur church choir.
None of these excuses are valid. Everyone can learn to improve their voices; we can work with or around anyone’s availability and if you have talent, the Gospels teach that it must be used and not hidden.
It is a shame to possess even a small amount of talent and not make the effort to use it as part of your role as a member of Christ’s Church.
Being a part of the choir is important liturgically, but it can serve as a means to social interaction. The choir is a place where you can make new friends and celebrate many occasions together throughout the year.
If you ever had the thought yourself or had someone turn around to you in church and say, “You should join the choir,” maybe that was your own personal invitation from God. Don’t miss out. Answer the call!
